                                        Three Floors Above

Sept. 20 ?

Here I stand at the bottom of the stairs
Three floors above is my only love
I left a little over a year ago
I hiked through thousands of miles
  Of ice and snow

But now I'm back
   And in my pack
I have a little sack
And it's full of that stuff
Men die for

There's enough gold to buy a little farm
Have those kids you always dreamed about
   Grow us a little garden
Sit on the porch together
   Under the stars above
And think of nothing but our love

My heart beats with pride
As I take my first step to the first floor
I'm so happy I don't have to wait any more
I see the top of the first floor
Only two more floors to go
I have reached the top of the first floor
Ready to head up the steps
   To the second floor
I've never felt like this before

I'm to the top of second floor
Only one floor more
Ready to go to the third floor
I see a light by her door
   Only a few steps more
I see a little note on her door

It says "Lucy May doesn't live here any more"
She waited more than a year
She now lives in heaven
   Up on the thousandth floor
Where her heart won't be broken any more
She waited as long as she could
God has taken her away as he said he would

           A Thousand Floors Above
